(UPDATE) I have been working on it...

Farm find 1974 VW Thing 181
I cleaned out the gas tank and replaced all the fuel lines. 

New parts installed:
carburetor
used 009 dizzy new electronic Ignition
tires
 j tubes
thing exhaust
rear main seal
clutch 
throughout bearing 
oil cooler seals 
valve cover gaskets
intake boots and gaskets
spark plugs
engine trans mounts 
engine compartment seal
Fan belt

What does it need?
Most of the electrical seems to be good as far as the lights and turn signals, etc. There is holes in the battery tray, but it does come with a brand new floor pan for the passenger side that you could use to patch the battery tray. I forgot to get pictures of the top. It is in decent shape, but the frame is messed up and one of the mounting brackets that goes to the windshield is broken. 

Lets make a deal and Ill finish it for you. Estimated $11,500 after I do the work needed to make it roadworthy

New thins ,new MST valve covers , new MST alternator base , new distributor w/coil ,new bullet proof transmission ( all weddle gears and 930 cv axels , made to handle any power made by KCR transmissions ( it was build to be running with 2276 fuel Injected turbo w/10psi )new wheels and tires , new beam w/all 4 kyb gas shocks ( silver ) , new front disc brakes , new A1 stainless steel exhaust system w/ stainless muffler , custom made seats , toy rides pedal set , new Geneberg shifter , VDO gauges , led headlights

VW Thing Year 74, Excellent Condition

1974 VW Thing Acapulco edition 

Runs by pull start. starter just clicks, front right wheel is locked up. I have an extra starter included with the sale. Car needs restoration or keep it as is for a ratrod look to it. Battery tray is rusted like all other air cooled Volkswagens. Rest of the pan looks to be solid. Front beam is solid with no rust holes. Body has rust but there are websites to buy patch panels from. $4,000 obo clean South Dakota title. Roughly 200 out of the 400 Acapulco edition things have been accounted for. NO TRADES

1973 Volkswagen Thing - Type 181

This is a very well cared for 1974 Volkswagen Type 181 "Thing." 
It starts right up, and shifts smoothly. No rust to speak of, and has solid body and super clean pans.  Recently updated wheels, caps, and tires. It comes with a nice soft top and door tops. Newer stereo.
These are not a super common classic (probably 500-1000 Bugs for every Thing!), only being imported for two years into the US. However, parts are everywhere, as it shares so much in common with its prolific sibling, the Bug.
So hop into a unique convertible that is just about the easiest vehicle to maintain, and put a smile on your face (and everyone around you too....this Thing always gets a ton of waves and thumbs up when cruising)!

1974 Volkswagen Type 181 Thing

All original 1973 VW Thing. No rust,low mileage still wearing its original top, side widows and seat covers. Dealer installed air conditioning (not working) and winch. Still has original mufflers with the VW stamping on them. Runs and drives great!
